What We Do

Advice, Advocacy & Community Voice

Our Drop-In Service provides culturally competent advice on welfare, housing, health, education, digital access and crisis support. We advocate for equality, influence policy and challenge systemic injustices.

HAPANI Stories:

“I didn’t understand anything they asked me.”

“When I was discharged from hospital, I didn’t know where to go. I didn’t speak English and I walked all the way from the Royal Hospital in the rain because Icouldn’t find the taxi.”

HAPANI helped her register with a GP, access English classes, and apply for theright benefits — turning a moment of fear into thebeginning of independence.

Integration & Community Connection

We create meaningful opportunities for connection, dialogue and cross- cultural understanding — building belonging, reducing racism and strengthening community relationships.
HAPANI Stories:

“Someone painted ‘OUT’ on my door.”

After finally securing long-term housing, she found a racist threat on her front door. The police told her she had to flee immediately. She has spent nearly five years back in a hostel — but with HAPANI’s support, she now has hope of moving somewhere safe.

Refugee-Led Housing – Retreat Housing

We provide safe, dignified homes and holistic tenancy support through Northern Ireland’s first refugee-led housing initiative.
HAPANI Stories:

“I was given 28 days to leave, but nowhere to go.”

A woman newly granted refugee status came to HAPANI in tears after receiving her eviction letter. With no guarantor, no deposit, and no English, her options were non-existent. HAPANI supported her housing review, connected her with Housing Rights, and ensured she wasn’t left alone in crisis.

Youth Education & Leadership

Our youth programmes support education, confidence, wellbeing and leadership — helping young people thrive in school, community and future careers.
HAPANI Stories:

“My son is finally happy in school.”

A mother with limited English struggled to enrol her child, who was anxious after years in temporary accommodation. HAPANI supported enrolment, liaised with the school, and ensured the child received additional support. She said: “When he smiles now, I feel my heart relax.”

Work, Training & Social Enterprise

We strengthen community-led leadership, develop volunteers, and build partnerships for collective impact.
HAPANI Stories:

“I wanted to work, but the system was impossible to navigate.”

A young man from East Africa was unemployed for months because every form was online, every appointment required digital access, and every agency assumed English fluency. At the Drop-In, he received broadband access, application support and a referral to employment services — he’s now working full-time.

Building Stronger Communities

We strengthen community-led leadership, develop volunteers, and build partnerships for collective impact.
